CanadaVOTES: CHP candidate Vicki Gunn in York—Simcoe

Friday, October 10, 2008

In an attempt to speak with as many candidates as possible during the 2008 Canadian federal election, Wikinews has talked via email with Vicki Gunn. Gunn is a candidate in Ontario’s York—Simcoe riding, running under the Christian Heritage Party of Canada (CHP) banner. The CHP is a minor, registered political party running a significant number of candidates across the country, looking to earn its first ever seat in the House of Commons.

The riding has existed from 1968 to 1979, from 1988 to 1997, and from 2004 to present. As of the next provincial election in Ontario, it will be recognised as a provincial electoral district as well. Over the years, the riding has been represented by the Liberal Party, Progressive Conservative Party, again by the Progressive Conservatives, again by the Liberals, and since its recreation, the seat has been held by the Conservative Party of Canada.

Peter Van Loan, the Conservative incumbent, is the Minister Responsible for Democratic Reform and Leader of the Government in the House of Commons. The other candidates in the riding, besides Van Loan and the CHP’s Gunn, are New Democrat Sylvia Gerl, Liberal Judith Moses, and the Green Party‘s John Dewar.

The following is an interview with Gunn, conducted via email. The interview is published unedited, as sent to Wikinews.

Computer professionals celebrate 10th birthday of A.L.I.C.E.

Wednesday, November 30, 2005File:Turing1.jpg

More than 50 programmers, scientists, students, hobbyists and fans of the A.L.I.C.E. chat robot gathered in Guildford, U.K. on Friday to celebrate the tenth birthday of the award winning A.I. On hand was the founder the Loebner Prize, an annual Turing Test, designed to pick out the world’s most human computer according to an experiment laid out by the famous British mathematician Alan Turing more then 50 years ago. Along with A.L.I.C.E.’s chief programmer Dr. Richard S. Wallace, two other Loebner prize winners, Robby Garner and this year’s winner, Rollo Carpenter, also gave presentations, as did other finalists.

The University of Surrey venue was chosen, according to Dr. Wallace, not only because it was outside the U.S. (A.L.I.C.E.’s birthday fell on the Thanksgiving Day weekend holiday there, so he expected few people would attend a conference in America), but also because of its recently erected statue of Alan Turing, who posed the famous A. I. experiment which inspired much of the work on bots like A.L.I.C.E. University of Surrey Digital World Research Centre organizers Lynn and David Hamill were pleased to host the event because it encourages multi-disciplinary interaction, and because of the Centre’s interest in interaction between humans and computers.File:ALICE Birthday Cake.jpg

Dr. Wallace gave a keynote address outlining the history of A.L.I.C.E. and AIML. Many people commented on the fact the he seemed to have moved around a lot in the last ten years, having lived in New York, Pennsylvania, San Francisco, Maine, Amsterdam and Philadelphia, while working on the Alicebot project. The A.L.I.C.E. and AIML software is popular among chat robot enthusiats primarily because of its distribution under the GNU free software license. One of Dr. Wallace’s PowerPoint slides asked the question, “How do you make money from free software?” His answer: memberships, subscriptions, books, directories, syndicated ads, consulting, teaching, and something called the Superbot.

Rollo Carpenter gave a fascinating presentation on his learning bot Jabberwacky, reading from several sample conversations wherein the bot seemed amazingly humanlike. Unlike the free A.L.I.C.E. software, Carpenter uses a proprietary learning approach so that the bot actually mimics the personality of each individual chatter. The more people who chat with Jabberwacky, the better it becomes at this kind of mimicry.

In another interesting presentation, Dr. Hamill related present-day research on chat robots to earlier work on dialog analysis in telephone conversations. Phone calls have many similarities to the one-on-one chats that bots encounter on the web and in IM. Dr. Hamill also related our social expectations of bots to social class structure and how servants were expected to behave in Victorian England. He cited the famous Microsoft paperclip as the most egregius example of a bot that violated all the rules of a good servant’s behavior.

Bots have advanced a long way since philanthropist Hugh Loebner launched his controversial contest 15 years ago. His Turing Test contest, which offers an award of $100,000 for the first program to pass an “audio-visual” version of the game, also awards a bronze medal and $2000 every year for the “most human computer” according to a panel of judges. Huma Shah of the University of Westminster presented examples of bots used by large corporations to help sell furniture, provide the latest information about automotive products, and help customers open bank accounts. Several companies in the U.S. and Europe offer customized bot personalities for corporate web sites.

Even though Turing’s Test remains controversial, this group of enthusiastic developers seems determined to carry on the tradition and try to develop more and more human like chat bots.Hugh Loebner is dedicated to carry on his contest for the rest of his life, in spite of his critics. He hopes that a large enough constituency of winners will exist to keep the competition going well beyond his own lifetime. Dr. Wallace says, “Nobody has gotten rich from chat robots yet, but that doesn’t stop people from trying. There is such a thing as ‘bot fever’. For some people who meet a bot for the first time, it can pass the Turing Test for them, and they get very excited.”

State of emergency declared in New York over H1N1 swine flu virus

Thursday, October 29, 2009

According to US health officials, New York state governor David Paterson has declared a state of emergency in the state as a result of the H1N1 swine flu outbreak.

The Associated Press news agency reports that the six-page declaration was issued because at least 75 people have died of H1N1 related illnesses in New York since April. Three have died from H1N1 related illnesses just this past week. The declaration also says that human cases of the virus are on the rise.

Paterson says he issued the declaration because “a disaster has occurred throughout New York State, for which the affected local governments are unable to respond adequately.”

The declaration will allow health officials more access to the H1N1 vaccine and the seasonal flu shot. It will also allow for an increase in the number of vaccine doses available in the state and will allow more health care facilities to administer the vaccine, including dentists and pharmacists. Schools with health centers will also be allowed to administer both vaccines.

Despite the declaration, officials stressed that there is no reason to worry. A spokeswoman for the New York State Department of Health, Claire Pospisil, said that “it [the declaration] helps us to be more prepared.”

The order came shortly after US president Barack Obama declared a national emergency last Saturday, a response to the spreading of the virus, which has now been circulated in 46 states.

British Prime Minister David Cameron makes unannounced visit to Libya

Friday, February 1, 2013

British Prime Minister David Cameron made an unannounced visit to the Libyan capital city of Tripoli yesterday after visiting Algeria earlier in the day.

David Cameron pledged that Britain would help in training Libya’s security forces. He said in a joint press conference held with Libyan Prime Minister Ali Zeidan that “the British people want to stand with you and help you deliver the greater security that Libya needs”. Cameron also reiterated his support for the French-backed intervention in Mali, denying suggestions put to him that foreign intervention in Islamic countries would lead to a backlash against Western nations by al-Qaeda.

The security was tight during his walkabout in the Martyrs’ Square, where police attempted to hold back the locals as a police helicopter flew overhead. His visit to Tripoli comes in the aftermath of recent threats to the British embassy and just a week after British citizens were urged to leave the second largest city of Benghazi due to a “specific and imminent” threat to Westerners.

Police officers investigating the 1988 Lockerbie bombing from the Dumfries and Galloway Constabulary have been granted access to new information to help them with their inquiries. In 2001, Abdelbaset al-Megrahi was convicted of murder and sentenced to life imprisonment but was released in 2009 on compassionate health grounds and died last year.

Brazil’s Minas state stops sales of Toyota Corolla

Friday, April 23, 2010

Minas, one of the largest states of Brazil, has stopped the sale of the Toyota Corolla over safety concerns.

The move was made after nine Corolla customers reported that their cars automatically accelerated. The state public prosecutor’s office said in an online statement on Tuesday that the problem is blamed on accelerator pedals sticking underneath floor mats. Local government said the issue was “putting in danger the lives of occupants”.

According to the prosecutor’s office, sales of Corollas may resume when Toyota alters the floormats in its current models. Toyota has recalled over eight million vehicles worldwide due to acceleration problems.

Your 3 Month Old Baby A Sweet Bundle Of Joy!

By Carrie Lauth

Your 3 month old baby is such a sweet bundle of joy! This is a wonderful age and parenting is a delight. Your baby is waking up to the world around him and coming out of the sleepy fog he was in as a newborn. You’re discovering little facets of his personality and he’s charming everyone he meets.

Physical Development

Your baby is getting a bit more organized with his movements, although it will still be some time before he’s able to control his hands well. You might notice him grasping at things that you have in your hands while you hold him. He’s getting so very interested in the world around him! He no longer gets so fatigued from stimulation, and loves to see new things. He’s likely smiling and laughing out loud now, especially at his parents and siblings if he has them. He will giggle and clasp his hands together in an expression of delight. He loves how this makes you smile, and is learning important social skills, the give-and-take of relationships.

His nervous system is still somewhat immature however, and you may notice that he still “jumps” and startles if he feels insecure (like if you are carrying him and suddenly squat down). The newborn reflexes are still present at this age.

Baby can hold his head up for long periods now, and he can lift his head quite well when he’s on his belly. It’s a good idea to let him have some “tummy time” daily to exercise. If he’s not wild about this, try kneeling down to his level and talking to him or showing him a colorful toy.

Feeding

If you’re nursing, you’ve probably overcome those challenges of the first few weeks and it’s smooth sailing. Your baby may look up at you and stop feeding to flash you a big, toothless grin and it just melts your heart. Baby has probably settled into a (somewhat!) predictable nursing routine now so you know what to expect. Look for the growth spurt that is common at this age. Your baby’s digestive system is still not ready for solid foods, so your best bet is to spend 2 or 3 days nursing your baby as much as he wants to, and your body will respond by increasing your milk supply. Getting some extra rest during this time will also help.

Keeping Baby Entertained

It doesn’t take an awful lot to keep baby interested at this age, and you don’t have to worry about him discovering the outlets yet! Just realize that baby is learning new things constantly, such as how to roll off the bed! Be careful when you lay him down on a flat surface. Keep a hand

on him constantly.

Most of all baby loves seeing your face and hearing you talk to him. He can even mimic your facial expressions. So sing to him, smile at him, talk with him, and read books out loud to him. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that you read daily with your baby when he’s 6 months of age, but why not get in the habit now? Baby will love it!

Babies this age also love being carried in a sling or other soft cloth carrier so they can explore

their new environment and stay close to your body.

Sleeping

Your 3 month old may or may not be sleeping through the night now. Don’t be tempted to give him solid foods too early in order to get him to sleep through the night. Studies show that it doesn’t work. Sleeping through the night is a developmental milestone and every baby is different.

Enjoy this precious time in your baby’s life!

An account of the Esperanza Fire from an animal rescuer

This article features first-hand journalism by Wikinews members. See the collaboration page for more details.

Saturday, December 2, 2006

As families fled their homes in the early morning hours on Thursday October 26, there was no warning. The Esperanza Fire southeast of Los Angeles and West of Palm Springs, California, had ballooned under the influence of Santa Ana winds to more than 19,000 acres as of the morning of October 27. No time to get the animals, no time for crates or even a leash. Sadly, owners left behind not only their horses, lamas, donkeys, chickens, rabbits, but also their dogs and cats.

Many of the families who did manage to evacuate their pets found themselves in the parking lot at the Fellowship in the Pass Church Red Cross Shelter where a MuttShack Animal Rescue team caught up with them.

Pam Anderson, Director of the emergency Red Cross shelter said that many people with animals had come and left.

The air was thick with smoke, and ash was raining down on the parking lot where dog owners, not able to take their dogs into the shelter were camping out in pup tents andin their cars.

Those who could afford it checked themselves into pet friendly hotels in nearby towns.

Some were prepared. Jane Garner, a small dog breeder was able to get all her animals out, and had set up her puppy runs alongside her RV in the parking lot. Others were not doing too well, having left home without as much as a leash.

The same scenario played out at the Red Cross shelter at Hemet High School. Animals were being boarded in vans, trailers and cars and small travel crates.

When MuttShack Animal Rescue arrived, a small fracas had sent several dogs off in different directions, running out of the school parking lot down busy streets necessitating an instant rescue response.

The Incident Command for the Esperanza Animals, Ramona Humane Society in San Jacinto welcomed MuttShack‘s offer to help at the shelters.

Ramona Humane Society had recently published a notice in their Newsletter about the newly passed “PETS Act”and warned owners not wait until a major disaster such as an earthquake or fireto prepare. “Be proactive to ensure that your pet will be taken care of.”

MuttShack and PetSmart Charities set up ad hoc facilities for the animals at both shelters.

The Red Cross shelter, run by Madison Burtchaell of the Orange County Red Cross was very accommodating about allowing a small emergency pet shelter adjacent to the School.

Barbara A. Fought of PetSmart Charities, an organization that works with animal welfare organizations and provide assistance in disasters, provided crates and emergency supplies.

MuttShack and Red Cross volunteers, Martin St. John, Tom Hamilton, and Steve Meissner helped assemble the crates to secure a safe environment for evacuated pets.

It was a great relief for evacuees who had camped out in the parking lot to finally leave their vehicles and relax at the shelter, setting up their cots to grab some sorely needed rest.

Firefighters and residents reported loss of wildlife and animals. The Esperanza fire burned 34 homes, consumed 40,000 acres and cost five Firefighters their lives before it was contained four days later on October 30. Firefighting operations cost nearly $10 million.

MuttShack Animal Rescue is a 501(c) 3 non-profit organization active in disasters and dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation and care of lost or discarded dogs, cats and other animals.

Are Your Business Overhead Expenses Out Of Control?

By Salim Omar, CPA

Businesses are always searching for ideas and concepts to generate profit. Some of these concepts include increasing sales, while others include decreasing overhead. No matter which way you look at it, the name of the game is to generate positive net profit numbers as well as positive cash flow.

There are three ways to make more money in your business:

1) Sell more products and services

2) Raise your prices

3) Reduce your overhead

Businesses that underperform from a financial perspective have often allowed their success to creep in and increase overhead; expenses and items that were considered to be too much money in the early, lean years, are permitted once things get rolling as a sign of prosperity (among other reasons.)

If you want to increase your profitability, you may need to keep your eyes on your overhead and look to decrease it. In fact, decreasing overhead is often considered to be the easiest way to increase net profit numbers.

One of the most expensive overhead items for almost any business is payroll. Most companies hire employees they don’t need, causing their payroll expenses to increase. Hiring unnecessary employees subjects you to registration and record keeping requirements and can be very expensive. You’ll have to pay unemployment taxes, withhold state and federal income taxes (as well as Medicare and Social Security taxes), pay for workers’ compensation insurance, and comply with safety regulations to avoid injury to your workers.

You may face severe penalties — and may even be found to be personally liable — if you don’t comply with all of these employment requirements. If you need help with your business, consider hiring an independent contractor or a worker from a temp agency rather than a permanent employee, as you would avoid having to pay all the fees listed above.

Here are a few ideas to reduce the cost of payroll:

— Re-structuring employee compensation/bonuses to link to production or desired expected goals. An example of that is a client I have in the construction industry who literally doubled his net profit using this one strategy. Salespeople are accustomed to working on a performance basis, yet many businesses feel that they need to also offer a base salary. You will find that offering salespeople a higher commission or bonus structure instead of a salary and lower commission structure will attract better talent and produce better sales figures for your business.

— Train, train and then, train some more: Often, poor or inept employee performance is NOT deliberate sabotage; it is due to a lack of appropriate training. Often employers assume new employees know how to perform their job functions and, therefore, do not orient them to their job. Spend time training each of your employees so that they understand their roles and how to perform at the most optimal level for their position.

— Hire slow, fire fast. Don’t hold on to people that aren’t contributing to the success of your organization. Firing someone is tough work for most small business owners, but if it’s got to be done, you’ve got to do it. And do it NOW! You can avoid poor hiring decisions by spending more time in the hiring process as well. Develop an interviewing and screening process to utilize when searching for new candidates, and have a few people in your company interview the candidate.

— Start by establishing clear deliverables and deadlines with every employee. Then, set aside time on your calendar to inspect their deliverables. A big mistake is to assume that just because you assigned a project to an employee, it will get done satisfactorily. Take time to inspect the results and give constructive feedback to your employee.

If you want to improve the profitability of your small business, you may need to keep your eyes on your overhead and look to decrease it. Reducing overhead is often the simplest way to boost the company’s bottom line.
