A Hurdle For Carsales And Trading Post Merger

A hurdle for Carsales and Trading Post Merger

by

Hayley Woodgate

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has warned that car sllers would be squeezed for choice if the proposed deal between Carsales and Trandpost goes ahead. The chairman Rod Sims said that the proposed acquisition would remove the Telstra owned TradingPost as one of Carsales Limiteds “closest and most effective competitors .

“The Trading Post provides an alternative that is popular with dealers and private advertisers,” Mr Sims said in a statement on Friday.

“Market participants have submitted to the ACCC that new entrants have been, and are likely to continue to be, unsuccessful in any attempt to match the inventory and audience size of Carsales or its smaller competitors Trading Post, Carsguide and Drive,” the ACCC said.

The size of the Carsales audience is impressive to say the least; In data released by the ACCC courtesy of Nielsen Market Intelligence, 84% of Page Impressions in Australia within the Automotive Classifieds market are on the Carsales website.

[youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QLHgTP8iuFk[/youtube]

On the surface it appears that TradingPost is not very popular with “only” 6% of Page Impressions within the marketplace, however when put into perspective as being CarSales biggest competitor in combination with a potential future merger between the sites, its possible that CarSales would further dominate with over 90% of Page Views.

There are two other notable competitors (second and third largest competitors to Carsales) which are Carsguide and Drive of whom are receiving 4% and 5% of the marketplace s page views respectively. These websites are a conglomerate of News Ltd, Fairfax Media, and large car-dealership networks in Australia. The ACCC makes specific mention to the size and resources of these businesses and their inability to penetrate the market.

“The two other largest competitors are Carsguide and Drive. The ACCC s market inquiries suggest these parties have struggled to win market share from Carsales despite having ownership links to print classifieds in newspapers, which might be expected to provide some competitive advantage through delivering audience and providing scope for bundled offers.”

Further concerns were raised with the following blunt comment:

“The ACCC is concerned that network effects may exacerbate the competitive harm arising from the proposed acquisition, by adding significant inventory and audience to Carsales.”

It is clear that the ACCC feels that the proposed merger would be detrimental to the marketplace, however it is yet to be see if they will forcibly put a stop to it.

The ACCC is currently seeking further feedback and has revised its decision date back to 29th November 2012.

Home destroyed by fire in Geneva, Florida

Wednesday, December 15, 2010

A mobile home in Seminole County, Florida burned down last night, leaving a man and his dog homeless. The cause of the blaze was determined as accidental.

Firefighters were alerted to a fire in a wooded area of Geneva at around 11 pm local time (0400 UTC) last night. By the time they reached the scene the house had already been destroyed and a brush fire had been started. It took them about two hours to extinguish the fire which engulfed the house and it took about 40 minutes to contain the brush fire. To combat the brush fire the Seminole fire department had to bring out equipment normally used to combat forest fires.

Firefighters were still on the scene up to eight hours later to ensure that the fire did not reignite. The man and his dog escaped from the house, however the man did sustain minor injuries. The Red Cross will assist the man with food, shelter and clothing for a few days.

A State Fire Marshal office investigator revealed that the fire was accidental and was caused by an unattended grill which ignited the house and subsequently the woods.

Teen broadcasts suicide online

Sunday, November 23, 2008

A Pembroke Pines, Florida teenager killed himself Wednesday, November 19, while broadcasting on the live video site Justin.tv. After making suicide threats and being encouraged by Justin.tv viewers and Bodybuilding.com forum members, Abraham K. Biggs, 19, committed suicide by taking an overdose of opiates and benzodiazepine, which had been prescribed for his bipolar disorder.

Biggs first began blogging about his planned suicide 12 hours before the actual event. He died after taking pills and lying on the bed in front of the webcam. After the broadcast, viewers who apparently thought it was a hoax posted messages such as “OMG”, “LOL”, and “hahahah”.

Hours later, after being alerted by viewers who had noticed that Biggs had stopped breathing, law enforcement and paramedics arrived, discovered his body, and covered the camera. The Broward County Medical Examiner’s Office has reportedly confirmed Biggs’ death.

According to Montana Miller of the Bowling Green State University, the circumstances of this case were not shocking: “If it’s not recorded or documented, then it doesn’t even seem worthwhile. For today’s generation it might seem, ‘What’s the point of doing it if everyone isn’t going to see it?'”

Biggs’ sister Rosalind was angry that neither the website nor its viewers reacted soon enough to save him. “They got hits, they got viewers, nothing happened for hours,” she said. She described him as “very happy” and “friendly and outgoing.” “On a normal day, you couldn’t really tell that he got as low as he did.” However, he did have relationship problems with his girlfriend, according to a friend.

Mental health professionals have warned about the possibility that other mentally troubled people would copy his actions. According to Dr. David Shaffer of Columbia University, “Any video showing it as heroic or romantic or glamorous could reduce the anxiety people might feel about suicide. It becomes a respectable behavior and lowers the threshold of suicide.” He and other psychiatrists recommend that potentially suicidal teens talk to others and “tell what’s going on.”

Why Do We Have A Social Responsibility To Recycle?

Submitted by: Ben Greenwood

To ignore the fact that we have a social responsibility to recycle is to invite to become our reality, what is now just considered the stuff of sci-fi or horror movies. Not paying attention to our individual carbon footprint may cause the human footprint to one day become as rare as an honest political speech promising a reduction in the burning of fossil fuels. The earth is in danger of turning into one great landfill, stripped of all its natural resources if we do not take note of the warning signs and act as a matter of urgency. There is much that can be done by the concerned individual: the recycling of ink cartridges is a great starting point.

Practically everyone uses ink cartridges today, whether it is at home or in the workplace. Worldwide, billions of them are produced annually. What everyone is not aware of is that the plastic in these cartridges can take up to 1000 years to decompose. Discards also leak ink into the earth, further damaging the eco system. Consider the harm to the environment if these were never recycled and somehow we had to keep finding burial grounds for discarded cartridges: the mind boggles at the prospect. As a recycling incentive, many manufacturers are buying back used cartridges and quite a fair amount of cash can be earned by anyone motivated enough to collect these from family, friends, companies or even an entire neighbourhood.

[youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m7MQJHxltE8[/youtube]

A social conscience need not be a burden and it need not belong to adults alone. Children are easily motivated by the enthusiasm of authority figures, be it a parent or a loved and respected teacher and are usually as eager to earn a gold merit star as they would be to receive any cash or other reward. Explanations regarding the importance of what they are being asked to do should also appeal to the superhero in every child and most will then want to be seen as the saviour of at least their small part of the world. Ask most children to collect bottle tops, empty cans, scrap paper and the like for a worthy cause, and they will bombard you with generosity. Make it a competition to save the earth and attach as much importance to the year-end result as that of the academic side of schooling and every child will have an opportunity to shine. Knowledge of recycling and the consequences of burning earth’s finite supply of fossil fuels will then hopefully become as important an issue with future generations as any other field of knowledge.

Nurturing a social conscience in our children as they grow should become as much a tradition as teaching them about Christmas, Ramadan or Rosh Hashanah. It is after all their future that is at stake. If we continue to deplete our planet’s resources at the current rate, there will be little to look forward to besides having enough sun-screen to protect our blistering skins. Stuff of sci-fi or horror films indeed.

Original Story
  • “Hotel development proposal could displace Buffalo, NY business owners” — Wikinews, February 17, 2006

Friday, March 10, 2006

Buffalo, New York —The Common Council of Buffalo voted on Tuesday to send the Elmwood Village Hotel proposal “to committee for further discussion”, after citing the need for more public involvement.

The Elmwood Village Hotel is a development proposal by the Savarino Construction Services Corporation, a project designed by the architect Karl Frizlen of The Frizlen Group. The hotel would be placed on the southeast corner of Elmwood and Forest Avenues in Buffalo.

To make way for the project, at least five buildings located at 1109 to 1121 Elmwood Ave would be demolished. At least two properties on Forest Avenue could also be demolished. The Elmwood properties, according to Eva Hassett, Vice President of Savarion Construction, are “under contract”, but it is unclear if Savarino Construction actually owns the Elmwood properties. Hans Mobius, a former mayorial candidate, is still believed to be the current owner the properties. Mobius also owns 607 Forest Avenue.

The properties 605 and 607 Forest Avenue could also be included in the proposal according to Hassett.

“We would use a Special Development Plan to rezone 1119-1121 Elmwood and 605 Forest to a C-2 zoning category,” stated Hassett. It is possible that Savarino Construction may try to obtain a variance for 605 Forest, which would allow them to enforce eminent domain, should the hotel be allowed to go forward.

The building at 607 Forest was also discussed to be rezoned, but it is unclear what the plans would be for that property. During the February 28 Common Council meeting, Hassett stated that the properties 605 and 607 were “now off the agenda”.

Pano Georgiadis, owner of Pano’s Restaurant at 1081 Elmwood, owns the property at 605 Forest and attended Tuesday’s Common Council meeting.

“Having a hotel is a bright idea. We all love the idea of a hotel, but the way that it is presented, is wishful thinking. This hotel does not fit. It’s like putting two gallons of water in a gallon jug, it does not fit. At the last meeting, the architect admitted that they are planning to put the undergound parking lot and the hotel, right at the property line. If I open my window, I will be able to touch the wall, that goes fifty feet high”, said Georgiadis.

“There is a problem having a seventy-two room hotel and fifty-five parking spaces. That means that all the other cars will spill all over the neighborhood. The footprint is simply too small. If you have a bigger [parking] lot, and a smaller hotel, I will welcome a hotel. I have a parking lot at my own business, and I am chasing people all day long. Remember, the city says it has ‘zero tolerance [for illegal parking]’. Try telling that to the guy from Albany who came to see his kids, that are going to Buffalo State, who would get tickets totaling over a hundred dollars”, added Georgiadis.

The city’s Planning Board is scheduled to meet on March 14, 2006 at 9:00 a.m. about the proposal. Although a discussion will take place, no vote is expected to be taken.

At the moment, none of the properties are zoned for a hotel. Savarino Construction plans on asking for a C2 zoning permit. If that does not work, they plan to implement a new zoning plan called a “special development plan” which would allow for only a hotel on the site. That zone would not be able to be changed.

“This [project] justifies Mobius’s refusal to invest in any maitenance[sic] or improvements”, on the properties said Clarence Carnahan, a local resident. “Where were the Council persons over the years? Where were the city inspectors over the years, to make sure that he maintained and improved his properties? The government was supposed to be protecting, not being preditorial. I see a predatorial issue here when it comes to this hotel. Over the years: Why has the local government been disfunctional when it came to Mobius’s properties? Refusal to invest in improvements, doesn’t that sound like a slumlord? Maybe I am missing a point here, but what kind of messages does this send to other slumlords that havn’t[sic] been jailed or fined? It’s [the hotel] trying to be pushed through.”

Carnahan also presented signs for residents and or business owners who are opposed to the hotel, that could be placed in windows or on stakes in the yard. Some of the signs said, ‘No tell hotel’, ‘Hans off, no hotel’, ‘It takes more than a hotel to make a village’. and ‘Keep Elmwood free, no hotel’. Carnahan plans on making more signs for a protest to be held on Saturday March 18, at 2:00 p.m. (EST) on Elmwood and Forest. Some signs were given to individuals after the meeting.

“First things first, Hans is the problem, and I don’t think it has been addressed. Let’s roll back the clock on this project. What can we do with Hans? There is such thing as eminent domain, which could be of greater interest to the community, to seize the property at its lowest assessed value”, said Nancy Pollina, co-owner of Don Apparel with Patty Morris at 1119 Elmwood. “There are so many ideas that have not been explored and we are about to give this parcel away, to a big developer.”

Mobius has not returned any calls by Wikinews regarding the situation.

A freelance journalist writing for Wikinews has obtained a letter, exclusively, addressed to one of the five business owners from Hans Mobius stating:

There is a proposal to develop my property which you are currently renting. Because of opposition to this development, it does not look like it will happen. I will let you know if there any changes.

Despite the letter, there have been no plans or decisions made to end the proposal.

To date, none of the business owners or residents of 1119-1121 Elmwood have received an eviction notice.

Business owners and residents gave an indication of what they would like to see happen at the corner; a project similar to one done locally last year. There, developers renovated two buildings on Auburn and Elmwood Avenues, merging the buildings into one thus allowing for more shop space. Among some of the shops to move in after the development were Cone Five Pottery, The Ruby Slipper, and Abraham’s Jewelers. Prior to the renovation work, the left building in the picture was boarded up for several years. Many of the concerned locals would like to see a similar development on Forest and Elmwood.

Rocco Termini, a developer in Buffalo, proposed a similar design at the February 28 community meeting

In an interview after the February 28 meeting, Termini stated, “I will be willing to take a look at this myself, or I would be more than happy to be partners with Sam, Sam Savarino”, who is President and Chief Executive Officer of Savarino Construction Services Corp.

So far Savarino Construction has no plans to team up with Termini.

Heres Some Interesting Input From A Dj Wedding Forum

Heres some interesting input from a Dj wedding forum

Putting together a list of the most common complaints brides have when it comes to the wedding djs they pick is the best way to get better at the job you do. So, that said, heres some of the most common trouble spots and the solutions. If youre a bride looking to hire one of these companies, or anyone looking for these services to cover anything from a birthday party to a corporate function, reading this article could help things run smoothly.

Young women getting married put a lot of time and effort into the songs they want played at their reception. Very often the songs are picked for personal reasons and one forum recently pointed out the fact the music picked to introduce the bridal party was missed. However, a little further down on the same page it was revealed that the bride had hired a DJ company only to use their equipment and let the brides cousin handle the responsibilities of being the dj. Thats where the problem lies. The best professional dj services handle everything for you from the music to the lighting and accessories. They even include the emcee and djs as part of the package so you can rest assured youre getting the kind of professional service you deserve from start to finish. These interactive MCs are specialists at helping to facilitate the flow of the event without being part of it. As you might expect, that includes the music. Hiring professionals means that youll get treated professionally and the music you want will be played, while staying clear of the music you dont. Another complaint centered around the fact that the Dj seemed to takeover the show and one actually did a break dance in front of the bridal party that lasted for ten minutes. It all comes back to professionalism and making sure you get an idea of how well trained these people are with a face to face interview before you hire any one company to work at your wedding. You need to have Djs at your wedding who act appropriately. Ones that can motivate the crowd without being overbearing and ones that know how to judge where breaks in the action are needed and a slow dance should be played. You dont need ones who break dance. One of the better ways to see if you and the dj company you are considering are compatible is to ask for a video of past performances and customer testimonials. wedding dj in toronto

US economy added 290,000 jobs last month, unemployment at 9.9%

Friday, May 7, 2010

Latest figures from the US government say that the country’s economy gained 290,000 jobs in April, the largest single-month gain since March 2006.

According to the Labor Department, excluding temporary workers for this year’s census, the number of non-farm jobs increased by a seasonally adjusted 224,000.

The unemployment rate, meanwhile, increased from 9.7% to 9.9%; the apparent contradiction is because 195,000 people who previously gave up searching for jobs started looking for work again, entering the labor force and augmenting the jobless rate.

The increases were larger than expected by economic analysts; according to a survey done by MarketWatch, economists believed the country would have added 185,000 jobs for last month.

President Obama commented on the numbers earlier today at the White House, saying: “This is the largest monthly increase in four years […] we’ve now seen job growth for four months in a row. These numbers are particularly heartening when you consider where we were a year ago, with an economy in freefall.”
