Ontario Votes 2007: Interview with Green candidate Peter Ormond, Hamilton Centre

Tuesday, September 18, 2007

Peter Ormond is running for the Green Party of Ontario in the Ontario provincial election, in the Hamilton Centre riding. Wikinews’ Nick Moreau interviewed him regarding his values, his experience, and his campaign.

Ormond did not answer three questions: “Which of your competitors do you expect to pose the biggest challenge to your candidacy? Why? What makes you the most desirable of all candidates running in the riding?”, “Are the property taxes in your riding at a fair level for the amount of services received in the municipality?”, and “Of the decisions made by Ontario’s 38th Legislative Assembly, which was the most beneficial to your this electoral district? To the province as a whole? Which was least beneficial, or even harmful, to your this riding? To the province as a whole?”

Stay tuned for further interviews; every candidate from every party is eligible, and will be contacted. Expect interviews from Liberals, Progressive Conservatives, New Democratic Party members, Ontario Greens, as well as members from the Family Coalition, Freedom, Communist, Libertarian, and Confederation of Regions parties, as well as independents.

Tuesday, September 6, 2005

British pop group Girls Aloud have won the 2005 Popjustice £20 Music Prize with their single “Wake Me Up”. The award, organised by music journalist Peter Robinson, is given annually to the best British pop single of the previous 12 months and is a tongue-in-cheek response to the Mercury Music Prize, the winner of which was announced earlier in the evening.

This year’s shortlist included Basement Jaxx, Robbie Williams and Charlotte Church.

This is the second time Girls Aloud have won the award – they won the inaugural prize in 2003 for “No Good Advice”.

Also announced was the winner of the £20 Invoice Prize for the worst British single of the previous 12 months. The winner, charity single Band Aid 20’s “Do They Know It’s Christmas?”, was the UK’s Christmas number one in 2004.

Relax In West Michigan Mi Retirement Communities

byAlma Abell

Retiring is something people start thinking about once they get into their 50s. It can be a daunting thought as the realization begins to dawn that working life will soon be over and other activities will need to be sought. It is important to remain active so the mind stays young.

Where to Retire?

At some stage, thought will need to be given to the subject of whether to stay in the family home or whether retirement communities might be a viable option. The question then becomes what areas should be looked at for retirement living. If Michigan is appealing as a retirement location, there are companies such as Oasis Senior Advisors – West Michigan MI that can assist in finding potential retirement communities to live in.

Retiring to the Ocean and the Forest Is an Option

West Michigan MI retirement communities offer the best of both worlds. One of the boundaries is St. Jodifferent annual events and many attractions to visit. The attractions include zoos, state forests, museums, and even a Dutch Village.

Retirees will have the best of both worlds. They can retire to peace and tranquility but at the same time have plenty of options for day trips to explore or to visit with family and friends. There is no shortage of choices when it comes to activities to enjoy.

Retirement need not be a concern at all, especially if the advice of a senior advisor is sought to help with locating a suitable community to live in. Once the retirement accommodation has been selected, the rest is easy. A removal company can take care of the packing and moving. Just pack a few personal belongings, travel to the new home, and settle in! You can also like them on Facebook for more information.

Australian Van Nguyen executed in Singapore

Friday, December 2, 2005

Convicted Australian drug trafficker Van Tuong Nguyen was executed at Changi Prison in Singapore today. Prison officials have confirmed the execution took place at 0900 AEDT (2200 UTC Thursday).

The 25-year-old Nguyen was arrested at Changi Airport in December, 2002, while in transit from Cambodia to Australia. He was found to be in possession of 396.2 grams of heroin. He was convicted in the Singapore High Court and sentenced to death under the Misuse of Drugs Act which mandates a death sentence for trafficking more than 15 grams of heroin.

All appeals for clemency were rejected. Singapore’s High Commissioner in Australia, Joseph Koh, said Singapore carefully considered appeals from Australia but decided the law must be applied consistently. “It had to treat Nguyen consistently with similar past cases, and apply the law equally to Singaporeans and foreigners,” Mr Koh said.

After saying goodbye to his client, Nguyen’s Australian lawyer, Julian McMahon, said Nguyen’s execution was a waste. “He is completely rehabilitated, completely reformed, completely focused on doing what is good and now they’re going to kill him,” he said.

It was previously reported that Nguyen’s mother would not be permitted to embrace her son before the execution, however, Mr McMahon has confirmed that they were allowed some physical contact. “Well I actually wasn’t in the room when that happened but there was a grill and they were able to hold each other’s hands and Kim was able to, at least for some time, I’m not sure how long, was able to touch Van on the face,” he said. “She told me she was able to talk to him and touch his hair. That was a great comfort to her.”

Prayer vigils were held outside Changi Prison and around Australia to mark the first execution of an Australian since Michael McAuliffe in Malaysia in 1993. Nguyen’s body is expected to be returned to Australia on Saturday for a funeral next week.

Law center helps defend open source

Wednesday, February 2, 2005

Eben Moglen, Columbia University Law Professor, will head the newSoftware Freedom Law Center (SFLC). An initial 4 million dollars has been provided by Open Source Development Labs (OSDL) to fund the project.

The law center will provide free legal service for open source projects and developers. In 2004 OSDL established a separate $10 million Linux Legal Defense Fund providing legal support for Linus Torvalds, Linux kernel creator and end user companies subjected to Linux-related litigation by the SCO Group. The new law center will not be affiliated with the OSDL.

“This is about taking care of the goose that laid the golden egg and not letting wolves come in the middle of the night and steal it away,” Moglen said during a press conference. “This is a legal firm not involved so much in litigating and defending as it will be for counseling and advising and nurturing non-profits and to prevent millions of dollars in litigation.”

Moglen will serve as chairman and director-counsel of the non-profit organization. Also on board as directors are: Lawrence Lessig, law professor at Stanford Law School; Daniel Weitzner, director of the World Wide Web Consortium‘s technology and society activities; and Diane Peters, general counsel at the OSDL. Daniel Ravicher, executive director of the Public Patent Foundation, will help manage as legal director.

Moglen, one of the world.s leading experts on copyright law as applied to software, will run the new Law Center from its headquarters in New York City. The Law Center will initially have two full-time intellectual property attorneys on staff and expects to expand to four attorneys later this year. Initial clients for the Law Center include the Free Software Foundation and the Samba Project.

Other services provided by the SFLC include: asset stewardship, to avoid intellectual property claim conflict; license review and compatibility analysis; legal consulting and lawyer training.

Euro reaches new lows

Friday, July 15, 2011

On Tuesday, the Euro fell to a new record low in relation to the Swiss Franc, and to multi-month lows against the U.S. Dollar and Japanese yen; all considered by investors to be safe currencies during times of economic turmoil.

The Wall Street Journal reported earlier that recent comments from the newly installed head of the International Monetary Fund, France’s Christine Lagarde, resulted in a sell-off of the Euro. At a roundtable discussion in Washington, Lagarde noted that the IMF had not yet reached discussion of terms and conditions of a second Greek bailout plan. In fact, a representative from the IMF is currently meeting with Eurozone policymakers to draft such a new proposal. The yield differential between Italian bonds and German bonds has spread to more than 300 basis points, something not seen in over a decade and evidence of investors’ concern.

Adding to the Euro’s woes is the upcoming release of the bank stress tests on Friday. The European Bankers Association said that they expect the data release to shed new light on the Eurozone’s banking situation. Representatives of several of the Eurozone’s governments, including Germany, have requested that the association consider releasing fewer specific details for fear that investor panic will ensue. The inadequacy of the capitalization rates has been an issue with the European Central Bank, whose president recently called upon Eurozone banks to make every effort to put their balance sheets in order.

For the time being at least, an unsubstantiated rumor reported by the Wall Street Journal states that the Eurozone’s central banks’ purchase of periphery debt has helped to quell the downward momentum of the Euro.

This is definitely not a new medical or healing practice, although it continues to grow in recognition and public attention today. The recent attention given to acupuncture may be viewed as clear evidence of its effectiveness. You might argue that a totally ineffective medical practice would likely have been discarded many years ago. In the case of acupuncture, however, the practice continues to grow. Many people have been helped through acupuncture in Wilsonville. The basic function of acupuncture is to promote health and to reduce or eliminate various forms of pain in the body. Many people would say that an acupuncturist serves as an instrument to help the body heal itself. In order to achieve this healing, an acupuncturist attempts to reach and stimulate specific points in the body, restoring its proper energetic balance. As with all forms of life, a human body uses energy to function. When illness and pain are present, this natural flow of energy is often obstructed. Receiving acupuncture in Wilsonville may be what you need to alleviate and remove pain and other ailments you may be experiencing due to obstructions in your bodys vital energy. So how does it work? Many people are terrified of acupuncture because they think it will involve huge and painful needles. This is simply not the case. While sometimes involving needles, acupuncture is generally not a very painful process. In comparison with your imagined image of huge, painful needles, acupuncture needles will likely seem extremely small and definitely not threatening. These needles are used simply to tap into the flow of energy in your body, not to create harm. Most people realize that acupuncture is not a painful process at all, but instead very relaxing and relieving.
