A Deeper Understanding Of The Plastic Bag

The Unsung Hero – A Plastic Bag

Every day, billions of people around the globe utilise a seemingly simple, yet widely prevalent invention – the plastic bag. Known for its lightweight characteristic and convenience, the plastic bag has found an indispensable place in our lives. But do we know the story behind this everyday item? Let’s delve into its exploration.

The invention of plastic bags dates back to the early 1960s, with a prime objective of replacing paper bags. The first patent for a plastic bag was issued to a Swiss inventor named Sten Gustaf Thulin. Thulin’s simple, strong, and lightweight bag quickly gained popularity, resulting in an incredible upsurge in the use of plastic bags worldwide.

Plastic bags are mainly produced from polyethylene, a type of plastic derived from petroleum or natural gas. This key ingredient undergoes several processing steps in a chemical plant before emerging as the familiar disposable carrier bag we know today. An important feature of plastic bags that sets them apart from other types of bags is their resistance to moisture and their strength-to-weight ratio, which makes them highly effective for a variety of uses.

Manufacturing Process

The production of plastic bags falls into six main stages; these are extrusion, colouring, printing, sealing, cutting, and punching. Extrusion involves melting and passing polyethylene through a specific type of die to create a continuous plastic film. The film is then cooled and wound onto large rolls. For the colouring process, colourants are mixed with the plastic to provide varied colours based on consumer demand. Printing is where company logos, information or designs are printed onto the bags, and the final stages involve sealing, cutting and punching handles into the bags.

The manufacturing process of plastic bags, while seemingly straightforward, involves complex machinery and a well-monitored environment to ensure the finished product meets varying safety and quality standards.

Environmental Impact

Despite their convenience and widespread use, plastic bags have a significant environmental impact. They take hundreds of years to decompose, and when they do, they break down into microplastics which can be harmful to wildlife and ecosystems. Much of the world’s plastic waste ends up in oceans, posing a threat to marine life.

Keeping the environment in consideration, various alternatives have come up in recent years. Biodegradable plastic bags, reusable shopping bags, and paper bags are some of the popular alternatives to the traditional plastic bag. Their adoption is a step towards a sustainable future.

Hence, while we appreciate their convenience, it’s essential for us to understand their environmental implications and consider eco-friendly alternatives.
